On April 11 and 12, 2014, the 9th WV State Animal Conference will convene in Flatwoods, WV at the Days Hotel Conference Center. This conference, hosted by the Federation of Humane Organizations of West Virginia (FOHO WV) draws attendees from throughout West Virginia. FOHO WV, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit group, provides an information network for advocates working with animal issues within the state.
On April 12th, we will welcome Commissioner Walt Helmick, WV Dept. of Agriculture discussing the new WV spay neuter assistance fund. Sessions on obtaining successful grants, recognizing & dealing with hoarders, profitable fundraising ideas, developing protocol for saving shelter lives, the WV Puppy Mill Law & other relevant animal welfare topics will be offered. We will again offer our popular animal law round table. Our target audience includes animal shelter directors, humane society volunteers, animal control officers, humane officers, law enforcement officials, rescue coordinators, veterinarian technicians, and anyone who wants to network with others in the WV animal welfare community.
On April 11, Doug Fakkema will offer a pre-conference Compassion Fatigue workshop. Doug offers advice on how to manage your compassion stress and deal with the burnout which often occurs with shelter workers and volunteers. This workshop is approved by the WV Veterinary Board as the necessary continuing education workshop for the WV certified euthanasia technicians for 2014. This workshop is not limited to certified euthanasia technicians since there are many who work in shelters throughout WV who deal with the heartache of euthanasia. This is especially true since 54% of all shelter animals die, many of whom are very adoptable animals.
